Chapter 10

Of course, I’m in trouble with Juliet. What’s new? As the mother figure of our group, she’s always the cautious one, habitually lecturing us to be careful and take fewer risks.

Not that I ever listen. According to her anyway. But I think I have good reasons for doing what I do! I know she means well, but she just doesn’t understand there are certain things I have to do for my job. I’ll have to face her lecture later. For now, my focus must be on getting the information I need to solve this mystery. Fingers crossed I find it here.

When I enter the library on Cooper Avenue, I’m pleased to see Abby at her desk. “Hello, Abby!” I greet the librarian in charge of research and historical archives. I’ve gotten to know her well since I started investigating the radio station hauntings.

“Well, hey there, Holly,” she says, looking up from a massive, leather-bound book she’s thumbing through. She’s wearing her usual floral print dress with a cardigan. Her hair is done up in a tidy bun. Is this a required uniform for librarians? “Back for more on the radio hauntings? I was listening this morning when Dawn Buster Dave was attacked. Have you heard any more about it? Is he okay?”

“I visited him in the hospital yesterday. He seems to be doing well and in good spirits.”

“That’s great news! I’ve been worried. Any idea what happened?”

“We’re not sure. The doctors are waiting on test results. Weird question, but do you have any information about the Montgomery sisters? Margie and Evie,” I ask, hoping she’s heard of them.

She scrunches her face, deep in thought. “Hmmm, the name sounds vaguely familiar.”

“They ran a speakeasy in Glenwood in the 1920s. Margie disappeared on Halloween night 100 years ago, and I’m hoping I can learn more about them.”

“Oh! Yes. I remember reading something about that. It was quite the scandal at the time. Young woman disappears without a trace. And on Halloween night of all nights. Is her disappearance paranormal?”

“I have a lot of angles I’m working on right now, including the mob and a secret boyfriend,” I admit.

“Ohhh, exciting!” she exclaims. “You know, we have an intern working on a special Prohibition Era project. Would you like to see what he’s found? But I must warn you in advance,” she holds up her hand, before I can answer, “it’s a mess. He’s just started, and he’s still categorizing the materials.”

“I’d love to see it! Thank you!”

“Then come with me. We dedicated an entire room in the basement to the project.” As Abby leads me down a set of creaking wood stairs to the basement, the scent of old paper, wood, and the sweet mustiness of aged leather greets us. If only these books could talk. Like ghosts. It would make my job a lot easier.

The aging red brick walls and the thick wooden beams running across the ceiling give it a rustic feel. Lights in antique brass sconces cast a soft, warm glow, throwing dancing shadows across dusty bookshelves and old furniture.
